Ghost Mussels (2025-)

Date: 2025-
Medium: Acrylic paint on PETG, mussel-based polymer, glue.
Dimensions: Various.
In this video, Alan Butler describes the production processes involved in the sculptural series, Ghost Mussels.

Ghost Mussels is a series of sculptures that consist of hand painted PETG plastic shapes in the form of ‘Default Rock’ assets, from the popular 3D modelling software Blender. The rocks are painted in the ‘Normal Map Pass’ colour scheme, which is a diagnostic view mode to reveal the direction and angle of surfaces in 3D animation and video game production. It is not usually a rendering mode that reaches final output, rather a informational aesthetic mode that is adopted from a layer of computer generated image production, similar to what Harun Faroki called ‘operational image’ – images that are not necessarily produced for human consumption. The surfaces of these hand-painted ‘default rock’ forms are then scattered with clusters of mussel forms, which have been carefully modeled and 3D printed using a plastic co-product made from real mussel shells, returning the material to an iconographic representation of its origin.
